“PRECIOUS” A GEM AMOUNG CRITICS & MOVIEGOERS

By Hunter

PRECIOUS, a movie based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, is the story of a 16 year-old girl who escapes her oppression with dreams of becoming a superstar.  Pregnant with her father’s child for the second time, Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe) is confronted with incest, obesity, illiteracy, and a mother (Mo’Nique) who abuses her emotionally and physically.

The film takes place in Harlem, New York, in the late 80’s and follows PRECIOUS’ journey through a hard knock life.  Her mother believes she should succomb to her situation, while her alternative schoolteacher (Paula Patton) and case officer (Mariah Carey), joins in the fight to turn her life around.  With this emotional tug of war, Director Lee Daniels gives viewers an opportunity to wallow in PRECIOUS’ depression; rage in her anger; and celebrate in the energy of a hopeful future.  But even with the moving scenes, there are some LOL moments, such as the girl-talk between PRECIOUS and her classmates.

PRECIOUS also pushes the envelope for today’s Hollywood stars.  Mo’Nique breaks out of her comedic shell with a dramatic, monstrous role that critics call award winning.  Mariah Carey bares a less lauded role as that in “Glitter” and “Wise Girls” for the Plain Jane depiction of Mrs. Weiss, the social worker.  And Lenny Kravitz makes his acting debut as Nurse John.

Other actresses, like Sherri Shepherd (Cornrows) and Paula Patton (Ms. Rain) also contribute to the powerful film, which now has major Oscar buzz.

“PRECIOUS” received three awards at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
